Meet Student Ambassador Khan Tangihaere-Brom
Khan is one of our 2020 kiwi ambassadors. He is in Year 12 at Kamo High School in Whangarei
Kia ora, my name is Kahn Tangihaere-Brom.
I’m 16 years old and a year 12 at Kamo High School in Whangarei, New Zealand. I’ve lived in Northland for nearly four years now after moving up from Auckland at the start of 2017, and even as somebody born and raised in New Zealand, I still find myself constantly wowed by Northland’s sights and experiences.
I’m an only child but I’ve always loved meeting and talking to new people. At Kamo High School I’ve had the pleasure of meeting two waves of international students from all over the globe, and the honour of showing them all around our school. Hearing about their cultures and their everyday lives in their original countries is always fascinating to me, and seeing them gain confidence over time in their identity here at Kamo High School is always fantastic. I haven’t had the opportunity to host anybody at my own home, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about host families from my international friends.
The best part about Kamo High School is its inclusiveness. As somebody who came to the school without knowing anyone, it didn’t take me very long to feel at home and comfortable with the people in my classes. Both the teachers and the students don’t make you feel like you have to conform to a certain style. Aside from wearing a uniform you can afford to express yourself without feeling judged.
My favourite part about living in Northland is being close to nature wherever I go, especially being so close to the water all the time. My only wish would be to live on the beach itself, and also for the school to be on the beach, and perhaps the rest of the town on the beach. That would be nice.
In my spare time I like to do a lot of reading as well as computer programming, but in general I enjoy just spending time with friends and family; going for a walk, playing video games, or just enjoying each other’s company.
