Tauraroa Area School

Type: Co-ed, Public
Location:  Tauraroa, Whangarei
Roll:  530 students
International: 10 - 20
Years: 1 - 13

Tauraroa Area School is a wonderful place to experience the real New Zealand. Our school is positioned at the base of the Tauraroa Ranges, surrounded by beautiful farmland but only twenty minutes from stunning beaches in one direction and twenty minutes from a large thriving Northland town in the other direction. You really will have the best of all worlds here. Our small, friendly student population of just over 500 students will make you feel welcome and help you to enjoy your stay here.

Our school caters for Year 1 – Year 13 so you will enjoy the opportunity to interact with our young students, especially when it comes to school events. The little ones love having the older students help out with their activities and it is a lovely point of difference with our school.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to live on a farm or near the beach, this is your opportunity. We have many warm, kind families waiting to host international students and they will make you feel like part of the family. We have families who love being in the great outdoors, families who are heavily involved in sports and families who love music.

Come and join our Tauraroa Area School family and create many happy memories. In the words of one of our former international students, “ I have had the time of my life and can’t wait to return for a visit.”

Tauraroa Unique Features & Programmes

Educational Highlights

We offer a full range of academic subjects which cater for all ability levels. There is also the opportunity to try some more practical subjects that you may not have tried before. As we are a small school, we can plan a programme to cater to your academic needs and interests.

Sporting Highlights

There will also be opportunities to experience the great New Zealand outdoors, through both our school programmes and with your host family. These include kayaking opportunities and cycling in one of our beautiful forests. You can join one of the sports teams in our school and local community. Popular sports include netball, basketball, hockey, and cricket. Tauraroa students compete nationally in many sporting events and we are proud of their achievements.

Cultural Highlights

Our jazz band is amazing. We have a large group of students involved with our jazz band and we perform at local events. If you play an instrument and are keen to be part of our jazz group, we would love to include you.

Drama is a real strength at our school with our students performing regularly in Whangarei with shows they have written and directed. Whangarei is the largest town in Northland. Shakespeare is popular with our students and this year we had seventeen students selected to perform at the National Shakespeare Competition in Wellington. They featured on national television with one of our students being the first blind student to be selected. We felt very proud.

Special Facilities

Some of the unique events at our school include our Country Day where students bring their lambs, calves etc to school to be judged. This is a popular day and one that the whole school joins with our farming community. We are also able to include the whole school in events such as our school ‘hangi’ where food is cooked in the traditional way and shared together. We have a school ‘kapa haka’ group which would give you the opportunity to learn some of the Maori cultural waiata(songs) and haka.
