Kamo Intermediate School is an inclusive learning community where we celebrate opportunities, learning and achieving together as reflected in our school motto which is “Together, Building Tomorrow”.

 

The school in the growing suburb of Kamo, which is near the northern boundary of Whangārei and is close to many facilities. A local shopping centre is located a short walk away from our school. Our teachers are passionate and supportive, and offer a robust curriculum in a wide range of academic areas such as literacy and mathematics, as well as offering many extra-curricular opportunities.

  • Kamo Intermediate caters for Year 7 & 8 students.
  • Our school is divided into six teams and there are plenty of opportunities to compete against other teams. These include: lunchtime sport, speech and reading competitions, tabloids, school wide sport events, mathematics competitions and cultural events.
  • We have a good wireless network for internet access, and all classes include e-learning in their programmes.

Educational Highlights

  • Students are encouraged to be responsible for their learning. They use rubrics to work out which level they are learning at and what their next steps are to make progress, with the support of their teachers.
  • Over their time at Kamo Intermediate, students develop their capabilities using our Graduate Profile. The capabilities students are encouraged to develop are: Sense of Belonging, High Expectations, being a communicator, having a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle, being respectful, and being curious.
  • As well as working on academic subjects in their classrooms, all students are offered STEAM subjects. Our STEAM programmes are: Food Technology, Textiles, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Music, Robotics and Coding, and ‘Maker Space’ which includes Hard Materials and problem solving.
  • Kamo Intermediate offers students the opportunities to take part in various academic challenges.  These include: debating, speech, Mathex, ICAS assessments, science fair, litquiz, and Otago problem solving challenge.

Cultural Highlights

  • Channel ‘K’ – we are the only school in the world that has this particular positive affirmation programme. The ‘K’ stands for Kamo and Kindness. All students at our school are encouraged to make at least 3 positive, uplifting comments during the day, preferably to 3 different people. It is difficult to be in a negative frame of mind if you are smiling and thinking about making positive comments.
  • Our core values are Integrity, Respect, Kindness and Resilience. Classes examine how they are showing our values regularly in their class programmes.
  • We have a Kapa Haka group who practice each Friday and perform at school and community events.
  • We have a performing arts programme and have musical productions every two years. We also have a school band.

Sporting Highlights

As part of the physical education programme, many sports and games are played. Inter-class and inter-syndicate challenges and tournaments are a strong feature of the culture of our school with wide-ranging, positive spin-offs. Activities cover most common sports and games as well as novelty recreational events. We have school championship events in swimming, cross-country and athletics.

Special Features

We have character classes to cater for our students’ needs. These include Thinkers Plus classes, bilingual classes (Te Reo Māori/English), and a sports class.
