Students Compete in Whangarei 'Amazing Race'
We welcomed all our 2021 Study Northland student ambassadors in a fun event yesterday in Whangarei.
The day’s itinerary included an induction at The Orchard Business & Event Hub, an ‘Amazing Race’ through the CBD and Town Basin and a bespoke ‘kiwiana’ pottery class with Wendy from Northland Potters Group.
Our current student ambassadors are a mix of international and kiwi students from High schools around Northland and NorthTec tertiary students. They come from New Zealand, Thailand, HongKong, The Phillipines, China, Tonga, Korea, Kuwait, Egypt and India.
Our Student Ambassador Program
The Study Northland Student Ambassador Program was established in 2019 to help all our awesome international students feel welcome and part of the Northland community. The program provides opportunities for ambassadors to visit some amazing places in Northland for uniquely kiwi experiences and to create stronger connections with the local community through volunteering and being involved in community events. The other focus of the ambassador program is to give a student voice to the Northland region so that students thinking about or preparing to come here to live and study, get a better picture of what it will be like. 2021 Welcome Event
We had a lot of new ambassadors to welcome this year so wanted an event with was relaxed and fun with lots of opportunities for students to interact and get to know each other. We split students into teams of four and had them racing around the CBD and Town Basin area, taking selfies in front of some of Whangarei’s stunning street art and iconic town basin locations such as the ‘Waka and Wave’ sculpture. They also had to complete a series of ‘amazing race style’ challenges.

After our crazy racing around and a picnic lunch on the waterfront, we moved to Reyburn House studio for a bespoke pottery class with Wendy. Students got creative and chilled out, creating their own kiwiana chess pieces from clay which will be fired and can then be taken away as a memory of the day. Check out the photos of some of the cute and quirky pieces…
